How to Join

FAQ

Who can join?

Everybody is welcome. At our essence, we are a student and alumni club, but members of the broader community are more than welcome to join.

For in-person practice, since we are located within the university’s Athletic Centre, you will need to have a membership to the facilities to enter the dojo.

Can I watch a practice before joining?

Yes. We actually encourage people to come watch us to see if they like what they see. You may notify us in advance, or just announce yourself at the dojo door and one of our members will be more than happy to welcome you.

When can I join?

You can only join during the registration period. Keep in mind that our Kendo curricula are designed to begin and end in accordance with the university terms. Thus our sessions run from September – December; January – April and May – August. For precise schedule information, please check out the university portal here.

What does it cost?

Membership fees are split into terms (Fall/Spring/Summer). Payment is required for each term. To pay, please either visit the above-mentioned university website or make your payment in person at the Athletic Centre Main Office. If you have any inquiries regarding registration, please e-mail us at uoftkendoclub@gmail.com

Do I need to buy the uniform/armour?

As a beginner, you can come in comfortable gym clothes, but once you have decided for yourself to commit to Kendo, it is strongly advised to purchase a uniform. Uniforms can be purchased through various sources; through the club, trusted online suppliers, directly at competitions, etc.

Once our Senseis have given permission, beginners will don bogu (armour), and will begin practising with the advanced members. Bogu can either be borrowed from the club or purchased from Kendo equipment suppliers. Please see the links page of the website to view the many online suppliers.

I am from another Kendo club; may I join your practices?

Visitors are always welcome! However, please let us know in at least a week in advance if you are coming. If you do not let us know in advance (applies to both in-person and online practices) you will not be added to the facility's Approved Guests list and may not be allowed into the facility. If you are 5th Dan or above, let us know and we will provide you with a free guest pass to the facility.
