Dean Ara Sensei visit - Sunday June 17th, 2018

On Sunday, June 17th, we had the great honour and privilege to host Team Canada coach Dean Ara Sensei. We would like to thank Ara sensei for leading such an insightful practice and would hope to have the opportunity to practice together soon.

UTKC would like to extend gratitude to all those who attended and contributed towards a successful practice. Let's keep up the good work, and cheer on our members during the 2018 World Kendo Championships!

Shibaura University Visit – February 19 - February 24, 2018

Hi Everyone,

This past week we had the tremendous pleasure of hosting four students from Shibaura Technical University at UofT – Koichiro Ozawa, Saki Aoki, Taisuke Hirai, and Yuta Nomura. Organized in tandem with Shane Kamata sensei, and Shigemitsu Kamata sensei of Etobicoke Kendo Club as well as our own Johnson sensei, members from UTKC had the chance to get to know, and to practice with the students during winter reading week.

The University of Toronto Kendo Club extends its thanks to all those who helped organize the trip, and gave our guests a great experience.

We hope to see everyone again soon!

Kiwada Daiki Sensei Visit – October 5th, 2017

Hi Everyone,

On Thursday, October 5th, UTKC had the pleasure of hosting a seminar led by All-Japan Champion Kiwada Daiki Sensei. The seminar was followed by a godokeiko with Kiwada-Sensei and UTKC, in which several Ontario clubs were in attendance as well.

Kiwada-Sensei is renowned for being a team Champion during the 2009, and 2012 Kendo World Championships, along with having for won the 60th Annual All-Japan Kendo Tournament in 2012. He is also a Chuo Univerity Alumni, one of UTKC's sister dojos in Japan. 

We are very thankful to have had the opportunity to practice with, and learn from Kiwada-Sensei, and are likewise grateful to all those who attended and contributed towards making the event a success! Here are some pictures from the events.

UofT Kendo Club: Practice Schedule

Hi everyone!

Thanks to all who came out to our orientations on Saturday and Thursday. It was a pleasure to meet everyone.

Whether you came to orientation or not, everyone is welcome to attend our regularly scheduled practices. The schedule is as follows:

Thursday, 8pm-11pm in the Fencing Salle in the Athletic Centre
(beginners practice first, ending at around 9:30pm-9:45pm)

Saturday, 10am-1pm in the Fencing Salle in the Athletic Centre
(beginners practice first, ending at around 11:30am-11:45am)

Do not worry about buying uniforms or equipment yet. We will do group orders later on. For now, please come dressed in comfortable gym clothes (e.g. t-shirt, shorts) and refrain from wearing jewelry and/or accessories, for safety reasons.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. We hope to see you there!

We will be holding two beginners' orientations this year. Please choose one to attend based on your availability.

Thursday Orientation:
Location: Upper Gym, UofT Athletic Centre (55 Harbord St)
Date: Thursday, September 15th
Time: 8pm-11pm

There will be members of our club throughout the Athletic Center to show you the way to the gym. Please come dressed in comfortable gym clothes (e.g. t-shirt, shorts) and refrain from wearing jewelry and/or accessories, for safety reasons.

To Kendo Clubs across Ontario:

We are pleased to announce that our sister club from Japan, Osaka Prefecture University Kendo Club will be visiting Toronto on Wednesday, September 7th, 2016. We will be hosting two major events open to other clubs in Ontario, a reception dinner on Saturday, September 10th and a seminar led by OPU Kendo Club sensei on Sunday, September 11th.

The reception dinner with Osaka Prefecture University Kendo Club will take place at Chestnut Residence (89 Chestnut Street, Toronto) on Saturday, September 10th from 6:00pm-8:00pm.

Please have one representative from each dojo contact us at uoftkendoclub@gmail.com by Friday, September 2nd with the number of members interested in attending the reception dinner. Please note that there will be an entrance fee (price TBA).

On Sunday, September 11th, Osaka Prefecture University Kendo Club sensei, Masayuki Hamaguchi-sensei and Shinji Tsubouchi-sensei will be leading a seminar from 1:00pm-4:30pm.
